We adopted Chia, now Darby, from Animal Haven in July 2015.
Before we met Darby, we had been discussing getting a dog with some seriousness and agreed we would rescue, but hadn’t been to visit any shelters or adoption events. As I was walking down Chambers Street one afternoon in early July, I noticed a sign outside of Petco advertising an adoption event and quickly rushed home to put the date in our calendar.
The day came and we walked into the store with nervous excitement. I instantly noticed Darby because she bears a striking resemblance to my beloved childhood dog and knew immediately that she would come to live with us. Darby was very shy and we learned that she had been rescued from the beaches of Puerto Rico with her sister Sesame. She was a sato!
Since that day, Darby has been a silly, sweet addition to our pack. She loves snuggling, pulling the squeakers out of toys and zooming around the dog park with her buddies in TriBeCa. While Darby is still shy with new people, she comes around with treats, especially cheese. Even when asleep, Darby can sense the crinkle of a cheese wrapper and will quickly jump up and sit nicely in front of the refrigerator to collect her “cheese tax.”
We are so thankful to Animal Haven and to its partner, the Sato Project, for bringing Darby into our lives!
