When Delilah arrived at Animal Haven from Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria, we had no idea she was pregnant. But soon after her arrival, Delilah gave birth to five beautiful puppies. They were all quickly adopted, but Delilah just couldn’t seem to find a home, despite being a staff and volunteer favorite. Little did we know, one of our dedicated volunteers, Sarah, was beginning to fall head-over-heels for our girl.
So Sarah decided to foster Delilah, and give it a try. She quickly realized she couldn’t live without Delilah and made it official in May. Delilah’s first weekend in her new home included a lounge on her outdoor patio, beef ribs, and long strolls through Washington Square Park.
“She brings so much joy and laughter into our home, and to everyone she meets on her daily trots around the neighborhood. It’s only been a few months, but it feels like she’s been a part of our family forever. She sleeps snuggled between us every night like a “smushy sausage” and since she’s always wiggling her butt and giving kisses, her nickname has become “smoosh.” One of the most surprising and rewarding aspects of the last month has been Delilah’s increasing interest in other dogs. We started really slowly by going on walks with friends’ dogs with everyone at a healthy distance. And sure enough, Delilah began wagging her tail, play bowing, and bouncing around while sniffing her new friends. It’s almost like she’s remembering the best parts of being a dog. Our hope is to enable Delilah to live her absolute best life and to continue being an ambassador for what wonderful dogs bully breeds make.”
