Nikita was found tied up outside, alone, as snow whipped through the air and temperatures dropped dangerously low.
Her paws are stained yellow from standing in her own urine for who knows how long. Under her thin fur, her ribs and hips protrude sharply, every bone visible, her body wasting away from hunger and neglect.
She weighs just 16 pounds.
So weak she could barely stand, Nikita was desperate. According to the person who found her, she had begun chewing at her own body and trying to eat rocks, driven by starvation and confusion. A deep pressure sore on her hip tells us she was likely confined for long periods of time, unable to move, unable to escape, unable to ask for help.
We don’t know how long she suffered like this. We only know that someone left her there, tied up in a snowstorm, and walked away.
Today, Nikita is finally safe at Animal Haven. But her condition is fragile, and the days ahead are critical. Right now, Nikita needs immediate medical care, careful refeeding, warmth, and constant monitoring. Dogs in her condition are extremely vulnerable, and every decision over the next few days matters.
Nikita is now on a closely managed refeeding plan to help her gain weight safely. Our veterinary team is treating her pressure sore, keeping her comfortable, and watching her closely as we learn more about her prognosis. She’s stable for now, but recovery will take time, expertise, and resources.
Cases like Nikita’s are why Animal Haven exists. When an animal arrives broken by cruelty or neglect, we say ‘yes’ and then we do everything in our power to help them heal.
But we can’t do it without you.
By becoming a monthly supporter of our Recovery Road Fund, you help ensure that when the next Nikita is found abandoned, starving, or suffering, we’re ready to step in immediately, without hesitation.
Your compassion gives animals like Nikita a second chance, not just to survive, but a future to look forward to in a loving home.
