Leela was surrendered to NYC’s city shelter, ACC, with a ruptured eye that needed immediate removal. When she first arrived at Animal Haven, we were heartbroken to find that she flinched at the gentlest pet and cowered when someone reached out a hand. The poor thing had been through so much in such a short time. We rushed the tiny 5 pound dog to our partner vet for further examination and to prep for emergency surgery. Upon x-rays, our vets discovered an additional injury: her skull had been fractured.
Both her ruptured eye and her skull fracture were likely the result of two separate instances of blunt force trauma. We didn't receive any information on her history or how she was hurt, but it was clear that Leela needed our help. Even with her skull fractured, Leela safely underwent surgery to remove her damaged eye.
Despite everything she has been through, tiny Leela sought nothing but love and affection, so it was no surprise when a previous Animal Haven adopter met her and took her home! They shared: “She has so much energy and loves to play with her toys. She is also completely trained to use the wee wee pad and is able to use the bathroom when she wants to at night. She becomes more dependent and is able to be in the apartment with Zella when we left the apartment for a few hours. When we are back, she always gives us a big welcome.”
