Barnaby was tied up on a railing in the East Village and abandoned. The metal leash he was tethered to was so short that he was unable to even lay down - the prong collar around his neck forced him to remain upright all night. Good Samaritans changed out his painful collar so he could finally lay his head down and they waited with him for hours. When nobody came, they took him in, gave him a much needed meal and bath, and they reached out to Animal Haven to help give this poor old man a safe place to land. Although we’re stretched thin, as most rescues are right now, we just couldn’t turn him away. Barnaby is estimated to be around 11 years old. His body tells a story of long-term neglect, and it’s heartbreaking to know how much he’s likely endured in his lifetime. His paws and belly are stained dark yellow from urine while painful rashes cover his entire undercarriage. His nails were overgrown, his teeth are fractured, his spine and ribcage show through his coarse fur, and he has many lumps and bumps on his body that our veterinary team is checking out. From his poor condition, it looks like he was kept tethered in one place, likely living in his own filth for who knows how long. While we can only make assumptions about his past, we can ensure he has a comfortable future. Despite what he’s been through, Barnaby's tail still wags and he just seems happy to have soft bedding and a place to rest - something that no senior dog should be deprived of.
