Recovery Road: Esme suffered unimaginable cruelty.

Esme was discovered in an alleyway, a lifeless body lying alone in the rain. She was so weak she could barely move. Severely emaciated and dehydrated, she even refused food offered by her finder. At just 21 pounds, Esme had been reduced to a shadow of the dog she should have been. Under her severely matted fur, her bones sharply protruded under her thin skin.

Though her body could barely support her, she still tried to engage with the people around her. Her soulful eyes pleaded for help. In the midst of everything she had endured, there was a dog who wanted to connect.

It’s a moment that says so much about Esme. And it makes what happened to her even harder to bear.

This was not an accident. The evidence points to cruelty and abuse.

Esme has pressure sores consistent with prolonged suffering. Her body needs time to heal before those wounds can safely be covered. At the same time, she is battling the devastating effects of severe malnutrition and dehydration.

Her recovery must be carefully managed. Esme is now on a strict refeeding plan because giving a severely malnourished animal too much food too quickly can trigger a dangerous, potentially life-threatening condition called refeeding syndrome. Every step must be deliberate. Every change must be monitored.

On top of it all, Esme may have aspiration pneumonia, a serious complication that can occur when material enters the lungs. Thankfully, it was caught early, and treatment is underway.

Esme needs more than time. She needs intensive veterinary care, close monitoring, and a team that will not give up on her.

Animal Haven has taken responsibility for her care, and we have transferred her to an emergency veterinary hospital so she can receive the monitoring and treatment she needs.
