Roxana

When Roxana arrived at Animal Haven, she was dangerously underweight. We rushed her to our vet for a full workup, and started her on a carefully-monitored refeeding plan. Despite everything she had been through, Roxana was sweet and gentle, seeking out human affection.

Once she was back to a healthy weight, Roxana had the opportunity to join the P.A.W.S. of Purpose program through our partnership with the New York City Department of Correction. Through this program, dogs spend 9 weeks living with people in custody on Rikers Island, in a special housing unit. The individuals sleep, eat, and play with the dog throughout its stay, contributing to training and enrichment. 

Roxana was a star student and was adopted before she even finished the program! Upon graduation, she was able to go home to her new family. This powerful program is a testament to the bond between animals and humans, and the resiliency of once-forgotten dogs like Roxana.
